Continuing Education Hours

  • 24 hours, 3 hours of which must be in ethics, biennially.
  • Agents or service representatives who are employed by another agent or insurer to work only in the office of the employer, and who do not hold a nonresident license in any other state, must complete six hours annually.

Continuing Education Compliance Date
Compliance Date is last day of birth month every two years.

Course Subject Requirements

  • Ethics Requirement: 3 hrs. for Producers and 1.5 hr. requirement for Service Representatives
  • Flood Requirement: Resident producers - 3 hr. NAIC compliant Flood Training course on one time basis if selling Flood Insurance
  • Long Term Care Requirement: Resident Producers who sell long term care must have a one-time 8 hr. NAIC approved course and a four hour renewal course for each renewal period thereafter.
  • Non-Resident Producers must take an 8 hr. NAIC approved course in their resident state in order to meet the AL requirement.

License Renewal Date
The license renewal date is the last day of the birth month, annually for agents, and 12/31 annually, for brokers. Starting 01/01/07: The license renewal date is the last day of the birth month biennially.

Types of courses accepted for CE Credit

  • Independent self-study courses.
  • Classroom study/seminar. 

Final Exam
Self-study final exams are required to be monitored by a disinterested third party (i.e., someone with no business or family relationship to the student).

Carryover Requirements
A maximum of 12 hours may be carried over to the next reporting period.

Course Repetition
Courses may not be taken for credit more than once in each reporting period.

Exemptions

  • Individuals who are at least 60 years of age and have been licensed continuously in Alabama for at least 15 years.
  • Individuals who are CLUs, CPCUs, CICs, ChFCs, CFPs, RHUs, REBCs, CHCs or ARMs.
  • Individuals licensed only for lines of insurance for which a license exam is not required.
  • Individuals licensed only for automobile physical damage insurance, industrial fire (debit fire) insurance and/or physical damage coverage on household goods.
  • Insurance company officers who are not engaged in the active sale of products.
  • Individuals licensed less than one year at the time of the first CE compliance date are exempt for that first reporting period.
